Would you like to add distance, hit the ball further AND stop having such a “quick” swing?
Here are 8 reasons you struggle to rotate & how to fix them which will help add more distance & give you more time in your swing
Every golfer needs to work on 1 or more of these.
If you struggle with rotation in the backswing, there’s a very high chance you are doing one or some of these movements.
Mistake 1: Head & Neck Rotation
If you keep your head “fixed” in the backswing, you won’t be able to rotate the rest of your body very well. It will make it difficult to turn the lower body & ribcage
Allow the head to rotate behind the ball. A good thing to look out for is the tip of your cap. Make sure it is pointing behind the ball at the top of your backswing
Mistake 2: Lead Knee
If you move your lead knee out towards the target in the backswing, you’ll restrict the rest of the body which will make it hard to rotate
Instead, allow the lead knee to move IN during the backswing. Mix this with the head & neck rotation & feel how much freer your body will be to rotate
Mistake 3: Trail Leg
If you keep your trail leg fully flexed in the backswing, it will make it more difficult to rotate the body
Allow the trail leg to “lose flex” in the backswing. It will feel like it’s “straightening”, & this will allow the trail hip to open.
PS: Don’t fully lock out the leg, just allow it to lose a little bit of flex.
Mistake 4: Foot Flare
If your trail foot in “toed in” during your setup position, it will make it much harder to rotate into the trail side
Instead, flare the trail foot out about 10-15 degrees & it will feel much easier to rotate into the trail hip.
Mistake 5: Alignment
Having an open stance without knowing about it will make it harder to rotate the body
When setting up to a ball, pay attention to your feet alignment & if you have an open stance, make sure it’s square or even slightly closed to allow for a better turn
Mistake 6: Trail Foot Back
If you struggle with rotation in your backswing, drop the trail foot back AND flare the trail foot a bit
You’ll find it much easier to rotate the body in the backswing.
Mistake 7: Lead Heel
This isn’t needed for everyone, but if you feel like you need a little more rotation in the backswing, allow the lead heel to lift up
This will allow more pressure into the trail side & more rotation in the lower & upper body.
Mistake 8: Spine Flexion/Extension
If your upper body stays in too much flexion in the backswing (think chest pointing at the ground), this will reduce the amount of rotation you can get with the upper body
Instead, allow the spine to extend (think chest pointing to the sky) & you’ll be able to rotate much more.
Mobility and Flexibility
Of course, you may need to work on your mobility & flexibility to some degree, but I mostly see golfers who don’t rotate suffer from one or many of these in their swing. Increasing rotation can help you lengthen your swing, which will help you hit the ball further & give you more time to hit the ball rather than your swing being too quick
